LabelWriter 5 series – Unknown label detected/Labels not detected
LabelWriter 5 series printers are only compatible with all DYMO Labels manufactured after April 2020. Your labels are compatible with the LabelWriter 5 series if:
The packaging is blue, and there are two black dots next to the barcode.
Or, the packaging is green.
If you do not have the box anymore, please check the core of the labels. If there is the DYMO logo inside, the labels are compatible with the LabelWriter 5 series.
If the labels that you are using in the printer are compatible as shown on the images above, please follow the troubleshooting steps below:
Power cycle:
- Remove the labels from the printer.
- Unplug both cables from the printer itself.
- Press on the power button 10 times.
- Plug the power cable back into the printer and turn the printer on.
- The light should be flashing. Insert the labels into the printer and feed them through. If you are unsure on how to do so, please follow the guide in the video below:
How to change labels in a LabelWriter 5 series label printer
Follow the steps below depending on if the light around the power button is flashing or solid after feeding the labels through. Please note that the printer has a built-in sleep mode which activates after 30 seconds of inactivity. After those 30 seconds the light will become solid regardless of the labels. To wake up the printer and check if labels truly are detected, press on the power button once.
If the light is solid:
- Clear the print queue to ensure that there are no pending labels to be printed.
- Remove the printer from the printers & scanners.
- Close DYMO Connect and open it again to refresh the software.
- Connect the USB to the printer. Make sure it is connected directly without USB hubs or docks.
- If the labels are not detected again, close DYMO Connect and run it as administrator.
Note: for MacOS computers:
Make sure that the extensions are not blocked on app start. You can allow them in system settings
If the light continues to flash:
- Remove the labels from the printer.
- Unplug both cables from the printer itself.
- If you have the power adapter connected into a power bar or a surge protector, please connect it to an outlet directly.
- Plug the power cable back into the printer and turn the printer on.
- Insert a different roll of labels into the printer and feed them through.
- If the light around the power button stopped flashing, please follow the steps on the left side.
