Why is my printer under unspecified (Windows 11)?

With the release of Windows 11, we have observed that in some cases printers may not install completely when connected for the first time. A correctly installed printer is made up of various components, and sometimes they may be missing.

Please note: This can also be caused by connecting your printers through external devices such as USB Hubs, USB Docking Stations and USB Adapters. They are not supported as we are unable to guarantee a successful communication between the printer and your computer.

We have been able to re-create this issue and put together a guide which we hope will resolve some of the issues you may face when installing your printer.

Important: If you have not yet installed our DYMO Connect Software, please do so by clicking HERE.

  1. Use the Windows search to find ‘Printers & Scanners’.
  2. Choose the Print server properties option.
  3. In ports, find the LabelWriter printer and note the USB port it is displaying as, eg. USB00X.
  4. In Printers & Scanners, go to Add a device and then ‘the printer that I want isn’t listed’.
  5. Select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings, click Next.
  6. Select Use an existing port: and from the drop-down menu select the port from step 3 and click Next.
  7. Select DYMO and choose the LabelWriter printer you are using from the list, click Next.
  8. On the name your printer page, click Next.
  9. Use the Windows search to open ‘Device Manager’, go to Universal Serial Bus Controllers and Uninstall USB Printing Support.
  10. Select Action, click on Scan for hardware changes.
  11. Use the Windows search to open ‘Services’.
  12. Find ‘Print spooler’ on the list and right click on it, select restart.
  13. Open the DYMO Software and print.

We hope this short guide will assist you with the installation of your printer on a Windows 11 Operating System.
